Cover A Couch with Hawaiian Fabric

Our Hawaiian fabric is not only great for your bedroom, but our bark kahala fabrics are also perfect for re-doing an old couch. We found this awesome four band Hawaiian couch on Craigslist, and decided it definitely needed a make over. The old owner was moving, and couldn't take it with her, so we picked it up for quite a steal. It does need a little oil and a gentle cleaning, but we also like the old vintage look it has. 

The fabric we chose was one of our black birds of paradise patterns since we knew our office couch would get a bit of traffic, and will hide stains well. We didn't want to have the cushions entirely covered in the fabric without a bit of piping to break up the design. We found a solid green linen fabric that matched the tropical leaves in this particular design pretty closely, and rolled it up to sew the piping around the edges of each pillow. I also thought a solid black, purple, or orange would make these couch cushions pop as well. Basically any color used in the fabric would work in my opinion.

I also like this particular Hawaiian fabric design because it comes in three different colorways, so it was easy to sew up a couple of coordinating throw pillows to toss on our new couch. We used the red colorway for the toss pillows, but I think some solid color coordinating dec pillows would be great, or we also liked the contrast of using one of our Banana Leaf blue throw pillows on our side chair.

I've been decorating with Dean Miller products for years and I love everything about them! It started when my son was an infant and I decorated his nursery in the cutest stick figure surfing print. Personally, I don't like them. Dean Miller Prints aka Dean Miller Surf Bedding is Fraud.

Review 1: 

I ordered 3 sets of pillow inserts from this company. When I received the email confirmation on a Sunday night, 2 extra pillows were added to my order. That minute, I immediately replied to the email and told the company that my order was wrong and to not send it out. I called the next day and they said they had sent it out and I would have to pay for shipping fees to ship the mistake pillows back. To top it off, when I got my pillows, only 2 of them were the size I actually ordered and the other 6 (including the ones they sent just to take more money) were wrong. I have emailed and called this company multiple times and no one will answer or respond to my emails. Worst company I have ever had to deal with. Do not purchase anything from Dean Miller Prints aka Dean Miller Surf Bedding. They are a fraudulent company!

What is Thread Count?

What is Thread Count Anyway?

Basically thread count is how many threads there are per square inch.

So if your sheets say 200 thread count, it means there are 200 interlocking threads every square inch. Sheets always use more thread count than shirts or clothing. A typical shirt is 60 x 60 thread count, or 120 thread count. The 60 x 60 means there are 60 threads going horziontally and 60 threads going vertically to form a sturdy construction. A typical flat sheet will have 120 x 80 thread count to make up the 200 thread count.

Generally speaking the more threads the better quality or softer the sheets. But a lot of overseas vendors are now splitting one thread and making it two, so your 400 thread count sheets may actually only be a 200 thread count. And if they use cheap cotton, the more thread count isn't always your saving grace. But for the most part, going by thread count is a fine way to pick the quality of your hawaiian sheets.

Below is the techinal definition of thread count:

Thread count is a measure of the coarseness or fineness of Hawaiian print fabric. It is measured by counting the number of threads contained in one square inch of fabric, including both the length (warp) and width (weft) threads. It is used especially in regard to cotton linens such as surfer bed sheets.

Thread count is a simple measure of fabric quality, so that "standard" cotton thread counts are around 150 while good-quality sheets start at 180 and a count of 200 or higher is considered percale. Extremely high thread counts (typically over 500) tend to be misleading as they usually use 'plied' yarns. i.e. one yarn that is made by twisting together multiple finer threads. For marketing purposes, a fabric with 250 yarns in both the vertical and horizontal direction could have the component threads counted to a 1000 thread count although "according to the National Textile Association, accepted industry practice is to count each thread as one, even threads spun as two- or three-ply yarn.

The Federal Trade Commission agrees and recently issued a warning that consumers 'could be deceived or misled' by inflated thread counts."

Dean Miller's beach bedding has never miss-lead or tried to deceive any of its consumers, and has always clearly stated that our cotton percale surf sheets are 200 thread count.
